Rogers Internet Overage Charges due to Wrong Usage Counter. Beware!

It’s not the best financial situation for many small companies, businesses and big corporations nowadays. But it does not give anyone the right to blatantly rip off customers. Even if you are an empire… Even if you are Rogers Communications

Here is a complaint from one of the Rogers High-Speed Internet Customers who was charged by Rogers for over usage of internet download/upload limit because their own usage counters were broken.

Around January 11 I got a notification from Rogers that 75% internet usage limit was reached. Then I downloaded some necessary stuff and cut down my daily usage until the end of billing cycle which is January 20.

On January 20 I checked my usage and it was less than 59 GB (the limit for High-Speed Express Internet is 60 GB per month). It showed usage until Jan 19 inclusive, so only one day left. On January 20 I was not using Internet too much, because usually 1.3 GB is more than enough for one day of browsing pages, reading e-mails and even watching some videos.

To my big surprise when I checked usage on January 21 for previous day, it was somehow over 4 GB:

It was absolutely impossible knowing that I used Internet on that day less than ever. And it was supposed to be an additional charge of $6 for overage:rogers-internet-overage

Moreover, if I indeed wanted to download something on January 20, I could buy additional 20 GB for $5 and avoid paying $2 per each GB…

During conversation with Rogers Online Live Chat help center they informed that the overage happened due to broken usage counters:

Rogers: We’re having a problem with the usage counter which is affecting many customers, you will not be billed for any overusage charges during this period

Here is a screenshot of Rogers Live Chat window:

I relaxed, thinking it was a one-time outage of their counters. But on Jan 24 I got a Rogers Bill with $6 usage charge for overage!

It’s outrageous…

Beware of this rip-off practice from Rogers with overage charges!

Check your Internet usage regularly and if you ever think that it does not seem right, contact Rogers to figure out what is going on with their usage counters!

Have you ever experienced similar thing when you got 75% usage warning unexpectedly and tried to cut down your usage? Or when you got additional usage charges on your bill?

Please share your experience! Possibly it’s a common practice from Rogers… Let’s figure out what is going on with their usage counters and why…

  1. I see that they got rid of our 500GB/month Ignite 75 plan, and now all of their plans are unlimited except for a 100GB individual one they offer. I wonder if it’s a scam they use to up-sell people on unlimited internet (or at least get them off plans that are no longer offered). I can’t think of any other reason that they can’t even provide a breakdown of usage by device (Bell at least seems to do this). Seems like they can just fabricate the numbers as they don’t have any evidence to support them. After seeing that they reported a usage of 100GB on a single day (for two people, this is nearly impossible), I checked the usage of all of our devices and it wasn’t remotely near that. They couldn’t justify their data either and even admitted that it was an unreasonable amount of usage. Spent over an hour on the phone and all they did was comp the overage charges and agree to another comp at the end of the month.

  2. Rogers is one of the worst companies I have ever dealt with. They just charged my credit card $200 for over usage which is absolutely ridiculous in this day and age. Needless to say I cancelled the service effective immediately. Apparently they’re going to charge me an additional $110 for cancelling because I’m on some sort of promotion. Don’t ever give them your credit card number. Truth be told there are many smaller ISP’s out there that provide a much better service at a far more competitive rate. In a way I’m somewhat relieved in knowing that I will never have to put up with this nonsense again because I’m never going back to these thieves for as long as I live. That $300 Rogers just stole is going to cost them tens of thousands in lost sales over the course of my lifetime.

  3. I had a Rogers Rocket Stick. For 3 years, it was always around 3.5 GB a month which is pretty standard. In January 2016, I received a massive bill from Rogers. After them telling me my computer had a virus, I took it to Staples and had a new disc drive put in at a cost of $189.00. Same thing kept happening. Turns out the dimwits at Rogers never told me I needed a security password so needless to say, there were a number of people getting a free ride on my Stick. Rogers CLAIMED that this could not happen with the stick yet their own people showed me exactly what was happening. I cancelled my services with Rogers but they claim I now owe them over $150.00! They will get their money when pigs fly! They have called me DAILY sometimes twice a day….I am disgusted and appalled that they are allowed to scam the average citizen this way. Not one person at Rogers ever mentioned that I needed a password – it was Staples who made this known. I have since contacted the Communications Advisory Board and lodged a complaint (not the first time with Rogers I might add). They are by far and away the worst company I have dealt with. Hey if the RCMP have had major issues with them then I guess they don’t care who they rip off!

  4. this is the same problem we have been having. we lite internet 25 GB for over 10 years now and in the past three months we have gone over. We changed our wifi password last month. we monitored our internet usage everyday which would be anywhere between 100 to 600 MB (both download and upload) then all of a sudden we have three days of upload at 7,008/6,133 and 5,299 MB. I have called rogers and they said it has something to do with ‘torrents’. they gave me geek squad number to call for service on my mac.

  5. We are currently experiencing the same problem and have been trying to get help from Rogers for months with little success. We are frustrated and angry and always thought Rogers was a better company. Now what?

  6. Does anyone know how to start a petition to stop stealing GBs! I must have at least 50 GBs a year left over since I used to average 21GB a month. Thats 4 BS lass, If I go over I have to pay extra but I don’t get credit for under usage!

  7. I have always had a 25 GB plan as I am on a fixed income. In Jan my daily usage went way up. I couldn’t get anywhere with Rogers, so I took it to my tech guy Feb 11 he had it for 6 days and he couldn’t find anthing that could be causing this. I have windows 7, as a last resort he disabled my auto upgrades march 11 and that solved part of the problem. My monthly usage for years averged 21BG he charged me $20 for everything. But I still get days when I hardly use my PC and its over 1000MB I have to stay off my computer for a day to keep it at 25GB for the month. My monthly usage always say I have 4 days left when I actually have 6 days left. before the new usage starts. I have complained on the chat on feedback and severak times on the phone. They say they will fix it but they never do and they say there is nothing wrong with my usage. They are totally usless.

  8. Rogers systematically fabricates data charges. I was getting hit by small overages every month and I assumed it was me. Until one month I knew I was going to be on wifi all the time so as a test I pulled my sim card (I run VOIP rather than a “Talk” plan) and sure enough, I get an “over data” charge on my bill. Proof positive they are fraudulently charging their customers. Don’t bother calling support as it takes 45 min to 1.5 hrs to get through and you are wrong, no questions asked. As far as I’m concerned they owe me $800+ for my time on support calls.

  9. I love that I found this site, but at the end of the day we all still have the same complaints and Roger’s just doesn’t care. We had five people living in our house two years ago and never went over 75GB. Now we have only 2 people and 200 GB and went over last month. Same story, your computer must have a malware/virus. Scanned computers, nothing….no virus…no malware. I have spent endless hours on the phone and live chat with Rogers and those are hours I will never get back. I had enough the other day and shut everything down. This is my daily usage since not using the internet. How the hell is this possible?

I’m so angry that they can’t help and I’m stuck in this stupid contract with a company of revenue over $13 Billon Dollars….Our Dollars for Screwing Us on a Daily Basis

  10. Rogers is a piece of shit company. Who loves to charge you internet usage that you don’t even use. This company is a piece of shit.

  11. Hi every body, i am also rogers customer up to now exactly, but i am thinking to switch to another internet operator, i’d like to share my last experience with you!
i have been using rogers internet cable with 200 GB limitation on usage, i check my usage regularly actually one time in week, tonight when i came back to home i gave a massage from rogers on top of internet explorer about warning you are charging for over-usage of internet.
i checked my account and i found on Thursday (2nd of June 2016), we used over than 100GB while we were at home during day and we came back about 10 PM.

it is to be noted our normal internet usage is about 2-3 GB per day, and our normal usage from internet is about 130 GB from 200 GB.

and also interesting thing is my internet will be renewed tomorrow for next month, and they claimed around 50$.

please don’t use rogers, they are really thieves,
