If you order some goods from US into Canada and deliver with UPS, FedEx, or other courier, you may pay applicable taxes at any local CBSA office without going to the port of entry. You just need to get shipment’s invoice from UPS and present it to Canada customs in order to self clear.
If you order anything with Purolator courier company and want it to be delivered on time, just call them and ask to deliver. That is right, unfortunately you have to do this. Otherwise package will be on hold at their depot forever and you will never know about this.

I called UPS several times about this, and received the same answer: “You can not clear package by yourself in local Canada customs office. You must drive 400 kilometers into Windsor!”

I had terrible experience with DHL delivery. It was a gift voucher ordered from US to be delivered in Toronto, Canada – pretty small envelope about 25×15 cm. It took almost three weeks!
