Nissan Infiniti G35 Brake Problems – squealing, fast wear out due to defect

Front brakes on my Infiniti G35 2003 started to produce excessive squealing and it was the time to change brakes again. I dropped by to the dealership where they checked brakes and gave me estimation of $740 to replace front brake rotors and pads.

The last time I changed front rotors and pads was 30000 km ago at Willowdale Nissan Infiniti dealership service center. Moreover, 12000 km ago same pads have been replaced and rotors machined. So, I can say that for me genuine Infiniti brake parts work for 20000 km or about one year. How? Why? One year for Nissan Infiniti brake rotors, and even less for brake pads?

I’m usually asking service advisors about the reason of fast wearing, probably something was not installed properly, or some parts were defective. The answer is always the same – because of the way I’m driving… Ok. This time I’ve decided to make some investigation and research before continuing to waste more than $1500/year on brakes for “the way I’m driving”.

I was very surprised with what I’ve found.

Infiniti G35 2003 has defective brake system.

It causes continuous squealing and very fast wear out.

Search engines provide many thousands results for the search query like “Nissan Infiniti brake problems”. And it applies not only for G35 or only for 2003 models. It applies to FX35, QX56, G35 Coupe, Maxima and to the models of 2003-2006 years. There are many lawsuits against Infiniti due to brakes problems, because replacing them due to known defect every year is too much for consumers. Moreover, it drops resale value significantly!

When I was buying the car at Willowdale Nissan Infiniti dealership, I’ve asked sales person if there are any known problems, or recalls for the vehicle. Dino Pop (his name) lied me that there is absolutely nothing wrong – no recalls, no problems, no issues.

I have NEVER heard from Willowdale Nissan Infiniti service advisors that there is a known problem with Infiniti brakes. However, I was asking them each time about the problems with brakes. And every time after brakes replacement at this Infiniti of Willowdale stealership, squealing noise appeared after several days of driving. I just used to it, however it is really annoying from time to time. And mechanics could not do anything about it, and they did not let me know about the well known problem, because changing defective brakes very often is an excellent cash cow for Nissan Infiniti dealerships.

And dealerships continue to install defective genuine Nissan Infiniti brake rotors and brake pads.

When I complain on squealing they always do nothing:

I just started to think that Willowdale Nissan Infiniti mechanics are not qualified enough to do the brake job.

Here is a solution!

Do not install defective OEM Nissan Infiniti brake parts anymore! They will die in a year.

Consider after-market brake rotors and pads. I personally did it this time. Brake rotors and pads with shims perfectly matched my Infiniti G35 2003. I replaced brake rotors and pads for the front wheels during Friday evening. It is not so hard as it may look like. I’ve ordered brakes from California. Everything (both left and right rotors, pads with shims) including one-week delivery and taxes cost me $220 CAD. It is a way less than $750 offered by the dealership. Brake parts are much better than genuine Infiniti ones. Rotors are ventilated and slotted.

And there is absolutely no any noise from the brakes! It is the first time for the several years of my ownership of Infiniti G35 when I’m not hearing any squealing or other noise from brakes.

If you decided to install rotors and pads by yourself, you may ask any questions regarding the process as well. I will create and post here illustrated instructions for the front brake rotors and pads replacement procedure for Infiniti G35 when I can find some more time.

  10. Trueler–I’ve got an ’03 G35 sedan with the same brake problems as everyone else. The dealership replaced them once and now I’m on my third set at 65K miles. Can you please send me the pad and rotor info for both the front and rear brakes.

  13. I have a 2008 G35 sedan with brake problems. Although I do not have the squealing problem everyone talks about, I get severe shuddering under heavy braking. The car has about 46K km but I’ve had the front pads and rotors replaced. I would appreciate the brand name of the after-market rotors and pads. Did you also suggest a replacement product for the calipers?

  15. I just replaced my brakes on my 05 g35 last July and I have been hearing bad squeling again as well as my VDC Off and SLIP lights are on. From what I have read online it means I need to replace the brakes and check the fluid. Can you send me the info of the brakes you got?

  19. Trueler – thanks for sharing this information. I’ve had two Infiniti vehicles 2004 FX35 and G35 with the brake noises to go with it – before looking this issue up on the Internet. Dealer is no help. Can you share with me the aftermarket solution? I am not going back to the dealer for this again. MSmith

    I have heard squealing with new pads and rotors only two times. When I was backing up and braking right after my car was standing overnight at pretty cold temperature. It was a bit of squealing only from rear (I replaced them just recently before I heard the noise).

    In general there is no squealing.

    No rusting, no other problems I can see with visual check so far (touching wood). I did not measure the wear.

    I replaced front brakes in August, and rear around October.

  25. I’m having the same brake problem with 2006 G35. Email me the after market brake info please. My brakes also seem to be hard when applied meaning they don’t have much cushion to them. When applying the brakes you have to actually let off on the brake because the slower you’re going the harder it brakes the car to a stop. Any answers to this.

    i hav a infiniti G35 and the noise is crazy i thought its the tyres and i had to pay extra for wheel balancing.

I have a G35 2003 and have replaced the brakes three times since purchasing the car with 40.000 miles in 2007, the brakes are killing my wallet, I don’t know much about cars, but I do know and now see the brakes on the G35 have a serious problem. I have had the cam sensor replaced twice, and my radio has been replace and is now going out again the audio broad. what a shame for such an expensive car.Could you please supply me with the after market brakes with the item number or what ever I would need to purchases the correct brakes. my G35 is a sedan.

  30. I will say this. 2009 G37 coupe brakes are still the same issues. At least the noise and squealing. And dealer says it’s “normal”. So I’m looking at options…other than giving my wife my bimmer. So no, they hav not fixed it.

    For anyone considering a replacement, doing this yourself is not difficult. Properly bleed your brakes with the help of a second person and your all set. Mechanical portion of this is easy.

    Please share the brands you like for rotors and pads.

  34. I have a 06 g35x sedan and the rear brakes need to be replaced. After all the complaints I have read I believe that I would like to take your route and go after market. Should I go ahead a replace the front brakes while I am at it? Please email me the brakes and rotors information please.

  41. I own a 2003 G35 M6 which I bought new in 2003. In late 2003 I recieved a letter from my dealer that told me that “due to the nature of the high performance brakes on my Infiniti that I might have to replace them somewhat more frequently” BUT that they would cover the replacement of such under warranty. When the warranty expired 3 years ago and I began assuming these costs I shopped around a little and found a great place to buy ceramic pads and drilled rotors ($185 dollars complete delivered to my door via UPS). What was more surprising for me is that this is a Canadian company (Toronto) so no extra costs/delays for shipping/handling/customs etc, etc. It takes me about an hour to install the front pads now which I pretty much do every 20,000km. The $400 I save each year helps supplement the speeding tickets I seem to accumulate driving this car.

    Could you give a ballpark estimate on how long the aftermarket brakes you use on your G35 have lasted or will last? Also, would that estimate be for pads and rotors or just pads? Thanks so much for your help!
